Doodlebirds is back in business! After a long break, I am back in business! I just listed some sock yarn, lace and roving in our Etsy shop.

We are open to custom orders, and requests for other base yarns not currently listed.
If you would like something, just send a convo, and we will hook you up with what you would like.

We have Merino, BFL, 100% wool and Merino/mohair in worsted weight yarn and Merino/nylon, 100% Merino, Merino/tencel, Merino/bamboo/nylon and our new Wool free sock yarn in a cotton blend.

Sock summit, good news & bad news.

Bad news:

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will not be attending The Sock Summit. It is a disappointment for us, here at Doodlebirds, and we have tried to make it work, but the military still dominates our lives. We hope to make it work next year.

Good news:

Navy man (the Doodlebirds husband) might be getting out of the Navy very soon! He is applying for jobs like a mad man, and has a few prospects. This means for the first time in over 10 years, we will be a full time family if all goes well!

Bad news:

This job thing may make it so we have to move again.

Good news:

Even if we do move, there will be no more deployments to war zones!

We are open for orders, we are well stocked in all of our yarns.

It's been a really long time since I updated.

Things got pretty crazy around our house for a while and we had to take a break.

My father has been having heart trouble and after a number of tests, medications and procedures over the course of the last few months that didn't work he was sent in to have a more invasive heart procedure done that seems to have fixed things.

I spent 4 days in the hospital recently as well. Things are much better and I am on the mend.

We also moved again. The family is back in Oklahoma, and we hope this is the last of the moving for a while. The plan is to get back into the studio June 8th, 2009. We have the house mostly unpacked and we are setting up the new studio. We were blessed with a house that has a detached studio. It needs a little work, but it is a blessing for my family to have my "mess" out of the house.

We are going to take a break from the yarn clubs for the summer as we prepare for the Sock Summit in Aug. My friend and pattern writer Melanie will be joining me at the sock summit with her wonderful patterns.

Things are looking up and we are ready to get back to work. thank you for all the support and words of encouragement over the last months. We look forward to a great summer.

Quick update

We hope this finds everyone well and staying warm as we make this last push toward spring.

We had a power surge, and lost most of the info off the shop PC, and our web host was having issues and our website crashed (a few times) and we lost all our orders from the beginning of Dec to the end of Jan. We thought we'd recovered all the lost info and orders, but it seems we are still missing a few orders. If you ordered during that time and you did not get your order, please let us know and we will get it out to you. We are sorry for any trouble and we have backed up everything and have been backing up weekly in order to keep this for happening again.

The Jan club shipments went out late due to a few set backs. We were waiting on the patterns for this month, and our wonderful designer had some family issues to take care of.

We also had a death and medical emergency in the family that added to the delay. With out going into too much detail, the death was a child, but not one of ours, and a close family member is having heart trouble and we are waiting to find out what the next step is with that.

Everyone in my house is fine, and so is Navy man. We are taking a month off from the clubs to take care of some wholesale orders. We have added a number of retailers and will be adding some new items in the next month.

This month is our 2 year anniversary here at Doodlebirds (I can't believe it's been two years already!). We will be celebrating it next month with some new yarns, colorways and hand made products, and some great sales.

We also have a new "employee" who is taking care of customer service when things get busy around here. That would be Navy man. I guess he isn't really an employee, he "volunteers" his time so long as I don't make him look at too much knitting, feel how soft the yarn is or ask him if he thinks my new socks I just finished are pretty. He has learned very quickly the knitting terms and about the yarns that we carry and about that "dye stuff". I also ply him with baked goods and cookies, so it seems to work out in my favor.

Here are the photos of the studio! It is wonderful to have my own space!

We tested out our colors on the doors, but in the sanding, it just didn't hold up so well for the photo op.

We have a peeping Candy. That is one of our sweet rescue pups that resides at our place. She is a little shih tzu poodle mix and she is a sweet girl. She was trying to get to me via the studio window. She was less the thrilled when she couldn't get to me, but she could see me.

We are still moving the rest of the fiber and base yarns in, but I am using the space to work. My family is glad to have the house back and me out of the way in my own little place. There is less dye all over the place now.

The studio is done!

The dust has settled and the smell of glue, new counters and saw dust and dissipated. The shelving has been moved in, alone with the stove and the rest of the cabinetry. We still need to paint, but right now, that is low on the list. Most of the yarn is on the shelves, the skein winder is set up and everything has been cleaned within an inch of it's life.

The last thing (other then paint) is to move all the dye, posts and other little do dads in and we will be set! I am going to dye the first batch of stuff in our new studio today. My pal Hillshounds will be the lucky owner of the first skein of yarn to come out of the studio.

We have a new studio (almost)

We have been working on a new studio for a while now, but with having a budget which is really, really small, it has been slow going.

Here is the studio in it's current state.

Not much to look at yet, but there in a sink (and a deep freeze).

We have a stove, counters shelves and cabinets that are going in. We also need to change out the 220 plug to match the plug for the stove. We were very fortunate to have all of the appliances and fixtures given to us by family. It is so encouraging to have so much support for my family along with my friends and wonderful customers.

We are going to do a little painting as well. In the next few weeks we should be all moved in and set up. In the mean time I have been hard at work. Business is really picking up! We've added two new retailers and have been getting a good number of inquires from yarn shops and on line stores about our yarn on top of our retail sales from our own website.

We are working on new colorways since it has been a while since we added some. Here is a preview of one in the works.

This is on Finn Top roving still in the pan.

It turned out very pretty. I just wish I had time to spin.

Also sign ups are open for the next 3 months of yarn clubs.
We also have up our Halloween yarns.

The studio will be closed

We will be going on leave and the studio will be closed while we are gone. The dates are May 21-June 15. When we get back the site will be updated to better serve our customers and offer more items. We have two new sock yarns and a great new merino worsted as well as some new non-wool fibers.

When it rains, it pours

I was looking at the dyed inventory the other day and was thinking how I needed to get the worsted wools dyed and stocked, and then I realized it had been over a month since I stocked the store.

Someone in our family has been sick in some way for that last month, and now I am sick again. The last round of ick has been the stomache flu. I seem to have gotten the headace/nausia flu and I just don't feel well at all.

I hope with the warmer weather will come better health and more yarn dyeing.

We do have some sock yarn stocked along with a few skeins of BFL worsted in the store. Did I mention we have some very nice patterns as well?

We also have a Ravelry group. We would love to have you join.

Dam knit raffle

Erin of Dam knit Came into work this weekend to find that a co-work lost part of her family to violence.

Taken from Erin's blog

"I came into work this morning and was told that she received some terrible news. Her cousin, whom she is VERY close to, murdered his 2 year old daughter and then committed suicide on Thursday (Their bodies were discovered Friday morning)."

She has set up a raffle to help raise some money to help with the costs the family will have due to the tragedy. I am have given stash and also roving and yarn from the shop.

What's going on

For anyone waiting for the update this last weekend, I am sorry. We had a family emergency and I was away from home. Everything is ok, and things are better, but I wasn't able to stock the store. It looks like it will be mid-week when it is done. You can sign up for our news letter to find out when I stock the store.

It is going to be done in parts. Sock yarn is going up first, then roving and the other yarns.

Almost ready

The stocking looks like it is going to happen Sunday.

Lots of sock yarn, some roving and a little bit of BFL. There will be more going up next week since I lost some time.

Read on.......Our furnace died this week, so I spent some time calling to get it fixed, freezing, and not wanting to use our gas appliances just in case that was the issue or wanting to spend time in our own house. So, I lost a day of dyeing. When it is all of 2 F outside, one must have heat, and also go over the mom and dads, where there is heat. It was "just" the circuit board, and I won't know how much that cost us until our gas bill comes.On a good note, I got the credit card function set up for the site, and it really works, I tried it a few times. I am smarter than the credit card stuff (with help from customer service and only 15 mins of hold time).

We also have that nifty new news letter sign up for the site. There is one to the right on the blog and also on the bottom of the mail page of the shop.

A small update

There will still be a stocking next week.

I hope to have the new credit card system set up by the time I stock the store, but it seems it is smarter than I am and I have to have the time to wait on hold for 45 mins to get help setting everything up. When I was working on it I clicked for help and the whole page I needed went away, never to be seen again. The hold times are really long, and I just haven't been able to sit down and wait that long.

Very soon, paypal will no longer be the only on line payment option. It is great, but I know some people would rather use something else.

I am also going to have some non-wool roving to put up too! I got some really yummy Soysilk and Latte. They will be in their own colorways due to the dye processes used on non-wool.

I hope everyone has a nice Valentine’s Day as well.

We have a new "baby" in our family. My wonderful husband adopted a rescue poodle for me as a gift to celebrate the day. I don't have him yet, but hubby says he is a sweet, loving, (fussy) little guy who just needs some love and a good family.

He has been to the vet since he wasn't feeling well and is getting some medication for a tummy infection and an infection in his ears, and is getting a nice round of grooming this weekend to take care of the months of who know what type of care and living. He was rescued from the pound by a rescue organization and now he is part of our family.

As soon as I can I will have a little show and tell.

Hi there!
I hope everyone is staying warm and cozy in this cold weather. It is in the single digets here.

I am feeling much better with each day, which is very nice.

I have been working hard to get everything ready for a store stocking. I am looking forward to getting back to work and getting thing stocked up again.

There will be yarn and fiber to start. I have a renewed love for dyeing fiber! So, look out for that.

I also have added a new mailing list to the shop. It is at the bottom of the home page, and I also added it to the right hand side of the blog in our places to shop, yarn to buy, blogs to read section.

Once you sign up you can get updates right in your email! (not too many)

Since I really love Indie dyed things, I want you to go check out Spunky Eclectic. She is my little yarn angle! She had some equipment I needed in stock when I couldn't find it any place else, and was so very nice to me when I had questions.

We are back!

We are up and running again. i am feeling a lot better.
There should be new stuff up on the site in the next few weeks.I am playing catch up right now. The customs are open again, and all our yarn bases are back in stock.

Did anyone else notice I spelled Pneumonia wrong? I guess it could have been a phenomena, being it was out of the ordinary, and I could be observed.... It wasn't pretty, and I am glad it is over. If I ever have to post again on 5 different kinds of meds that make me loopy I will have a grown up double check my work.

I hope the New Year has started off well for all of you. We got moved with out incident. We are working on unpacking the house and we are slowly getting things put away.

We are open again for business, but unfortunately I have come down with Pneumonia. I am home and on a bunch of medications in the hopes I will get better with out going to the hospital. (let keep our needles crossed)

This means that we won't be stocking the store for a few weeks. If you are waiting to see something let me know and I will add it to our to dye list.

We did get a new Merino/Nylon sock base for the shop that I am in love with.

I hope everyone is safe and warm. We went with out power for 5 days due to an ice storm. We are shipping orders affected by this as fast as we can.

Ice storm and now power

It's almost Christmas!

We all know what Christmas means, family, food, fun, gifts and (knitting) stress.

help fix that by taking the plunge

I for one and afraid to by my children any sort of store bought toy for fear they will get sick and die from the harmful chemicals in them. I have have two toddlers and they put things in their mouths. Everything goes in their mouth!

I don't know what is "cool" to make for my older two. They think that stuff I make then is cool. My oldest showed his whole class his hand knit socks even after I warned him purple isn't the best color for a boy in modern society. (He was a little upset when some of the boys made fun of him, but he still wears them)

Navy man keeps buying himself the things I want to get him. We got new cell phone a few months back that have bluetooth. We found head sets for a really great price. I love mine, he hated his and took it back.

I was going to get him a new one for Christmas, but wouldn't you know it, he got another one the other day he really likes.

He isn't so big on my knitted stuff. He is also a giant man. I can't make a sweater for a six foot three man in 2.5 weeks, or socks. Stocking cap?

I really am at a loss for what to get or make this year. We are moving over Christmas break, so that makes things a little hard. Also moving costs money. That sort of cuts into the Christmas budget.

Can I just give everyone a skein of yarn from my stash and say "Merry Christmas!" "Now give it back and I will knit you a scarf!" ?

What are you making or giving this year?

Once upon a time an indie dyer thought it would be a good idea to run co-ops for yarn. This indie dyer was in for a surprise when lots of other knitters and crocheters also thought this was a great idea.

This is what happened.

Guess who many skeins there are for a chance to win a skein of yarn from the shop. Your choice!

Rules- closest person to the number wins. If you are part of the coop group you can't guess since that is cheating.

Small store and Etsy stocking

I have added a few items to both the web shop and etsy.

I added our wonderful new Blue Faced Leicester Worsted in three colorways as well as our Merino sock yarn and our new oh so yummy Merino and Bamboo sock yarn.
If you haven't tried a merino/bamboo sock yarn you really must!

It is soft, squishy and has a nice soft hand and good body. I has to knit up a pair of socks out of it right away.

Roving should be up early next week as well.

Also a little update on Una our hairless wonder. She has found her place in the house. It is where ever she wants it to be.

Small shop update

Hi all!
I went to see the Yarn Harlot yesterday in Kansas. It was great! Carin from Lime & Violet gave her the felted squirrel we picked up when I was there to see them. It is really cute.

I have added dyed single ply Merino lace weight to the shop as well and undyed for customs. Single and 3 ply merino customs are also up.

Some of my sock yarn base is on the way. The Merino is still on back order. I am told it should be in some time in October. I am really sorry for this. I know many of you are waiting for this to come in so you can place custom orders.

I have ordered some new yummy base yarns for the socks. I hope this will help keep your feet happy til we get our Merino in.

I have also added a new Merino/mohair blend to the customs. Plenty for an adult sized sweater.

Meet our new family! (I need/want your help!)

We have added not one, but two new dogs to our family.

As we where going to the store to get milk last night (Sunday) we saw some people with little puppies. So we pulled in and Navy man was sent to see what they where. He came back and said "Honey, they have hairless dogs!"

We got a puppy. It is hairless and tiny and I am in love. Meet Una.

She is a Chinese Crested Hairless dog Her parents are purebred and papered, but not registered so we got for her as much as it costs to adopt a dog from the shelter. She is cute in a funny little ugly hairless dog way. I have wanted a hairless dog for along time! So, I have one.

This morning I went to the shelter to pick up girl number two!

She didn't come with demon eyes, but this is the only picture I could get of her holding still.

She is a Chocolate lab mix and is a teenage puppy. We don't know what to name her! I need your help!

I have added roving to the shop! They are all listed as a custom dye (under roving) That way you pick the colors. There is Superwash merino top, Merino/silk top, BFL, and 100% Silk roving!

The spinning wheels are also being added. They aren't all up, but I am working on it.

Hi there!

I hope everyone is doing well. I made it through surgery and I am recovering nicely at home with help from my family. I have three small incisions and two are a little tender still. I had surgery on Tues afternoon and was home that evening.

I will be processing any orders that have come in this week and the ones early next week on the 14th. So look for your invoices!

The webstore will open the 15th and etsy will get some new items that day also. I don't have a set time this will happen, I am thinking I will add things and update through out the day depending on how I feel.

I will also be adding fiber and yarn as the week goes on and as the kids go off to school.

My two oldest kids will be in school all day this year, so there will be more free time to dye and make items for the shop.

Hello there!
I hope everyone is enjoying the summer heat! I for one can't wait for it to be over with. I know in this weather the thought of wearing wool socks, or socks at all is the farthest thing from our minds, but fall is just around the corner!

Also our shop will be "closed" Aug 6th-13th. Any orders placed in that time will be processed on the 14th.

So why are we having a sale of this kind and why are we going to be closed? Well let me tell you.

Starting in November of 2006 (the week before Thanksgiving) I, being the dyer, starting having a stomach flu like illness that made labor seem like a walk in the park.(I am a mother of four. Three came into this world with out pain meds, and the last was very large and entered face up (no meds))

I had stomach pain like you wouldn't believe, and all the other things that go with a stomach flu. if I moved I was ill. If I thought about moving, I was ill. If someone looked at me funny I was ill.(that last part hasn't been proven in the testing, but I think it is true, it has to be)

I called the doctor, told her what had gone on over a 2.5 day period, and that now I felt like I was beaten with a baseball bat. She said it was the flu or maybe food poisoning. Ok fine.

Come January 07. I had two bouts of it in the same month. This time worse. (passers by just looking at my house made me ill. Still not proven in medical studies, but still)
I wished for a brief comma. (I don't think I am asking too much at this point)
I called again and I was told the same thing. I usured the kind doctor that I, in fact am well acquainted with the flu. having had it every Chirstmas break as a child for 13 years, and this my kind dear in NOT the flu. She didn't listen even after telling her my pain makes labor seem fun.

We change doctors.

There is bout 4. I say nothing to my new doctor. After all, it is just the flu.
Bout 5. It is a weekend. I missed knitting. Dear husband tells me I am calling the doctor and going in to see her. I go. I tell her what is going on. She says, ok, it's not the flu. (I told her about the labor thing, she listened, if she hadn't I was going to go into how it was cutting into my SNB and spinning guild time) I was X-rayed, pocked, stuck, & ultrasounded. Nothing! I was fine. All my insides where there (good to know I didn't miss place any) and nothing seemed to be wrong.

So I was send for a CT scan. Two days before the scan I was sick again. (and I missed my SNB again!) This time I am thankful I was sick. It showed my Appendix was enlarged, and that isn't good.

They offered to take it out if I want them too. (how kind are they to give me the choice) I choose to NOT keep it! So I will be in the hands of a very nice (not half bad looking) Air Force surgeon next week. I would guess he is good at what he does. He just stepped over the kids as they lay on the floor in the exam room. (means he must be a dad too)

So that my fine people is where I will be next week and that is why we are having a sale. If you read back, or remember we did have another health care related sale. I must amend my harsh words. It wasn't the Military Health care that sucked that time, it was the office staff that sucked. I, for the first time in many years am happy with the care we are getting. Thank you Air Force for caring about your people even if they are another branch on your base, sullying it with their presence.

Wooly Knob Fiber Mill
Roving and Lopi style yarns. Our niche is 'junked' fiber. We throw in
all
sorts of things like cotton and rayon. Each roving varies. It could be a
natural color with chenille 'junk' carded in or a dyed color with cotton
threads, or the whole kitchen sink. Same with the yarns.

We will be picking up fiber to be processed

Pricing: Our pricing system is simple! We charge on incoming weight.

Effective March 1, 2007, it's $7.50 a lb. for wool and/or other types of
fiber.

This includes all camelid fibers, mohair, angora, and plant fibers such
as
silk and cotton.

Pre-washed Fiber will still be $6.00 a lb, HOWEVER...

our definition of prewashed does not include anything washed in Orvis.
Any fiber washed in Orvis will be charged at $7.50 per lb.
A simple hot water bath will remove a great deal of lanolin and grease,
reducing incoming weight and saving you money.

If you define your fleeces as prewashed, we will also assume that you
have picked out any or all vegetation. We will not "monkey groom" prewashed
fiber.

Please bring your fleeces to be picked up in plastic bags so Matt and
Jamie don't have to rebag them.

Here at Doodlebirds Creations we got a new shipment of fibery goodness this week!

We will be updating our shop over the next few weeks with such things as hand dyed roving! Superwash Merino, BFL, SILK!!!

New sock yarn base in a harder twist and new worsted weight yarns great for felting or other projects calling for wool yarn (like soakers)

We have added BFL, and a great new 100% wool yarn that is just to dye for! Soft, squishy and dyes up great!

There will also be some great sales for some really fun things going on in the KAL/CAL world.

Soon Doodlebirds.com will have it's very own web site! It is being built right now, and should be done with in a month. We are still on etsy, and we will be stocking soon. We have had some weather and illness set backs, but we are moving right along.

We will be adding some new yarns and colors this time too! This will be a fun stocking with great new stuff!

This week has been busy. I had my wisdom teeth pulled this week. Lucky for me I only had two, but still it wasn't fun. It also rained every day this week. I couldn't hang stuff out to dry. I am going to have Mr Doodlebirds rig me up something in doors that can hold drying yarn and fiber. I should be getting my sock yarn blanks early next week and also some other neat yarns. I have my first wholesale order to dye up for a real yarn shop! There should be a store stocking next week or early the week after. Thanks for all the orders thus far! I have been busy packing orders all week!

The sock yarn is almost all dyed, I just have a few skeins left to finish up. We had a little sewer issue that we had to deal with and it cut into my dyeing time.

My time line looks like this:
Monday, finish up the sock yarn, Tues-Friday, dye non-sock yarn and work on the accessories.

I spent the week of spring break visiting my family. We are back now and I am busy with dyeing and things are moving along. Look for some pretty stuff soon!

I did the test dye with the new dyes that I got today. 14 colorways! Everything turned out well, I only see a few little things I want to change, but nothing major.
